We’re more alike than different. Turns out the best lubricant for most people is water-based, sits close to the body's own pH (roughly 3.8 to 4.5 for the vulva and vagina), runs low on osmolality, and leaves out the common irritants like glycerin, parabens, or added fragrance.

If you’re a fan of playing with silicone toys or latex condoms, water-based is your most compatible option across the board. And that’s what matters most, more than the marketing on the front of the bottle.

It all starts with pH

A healthy vagina is acidic. Cleveland Clinic puts the typical range around 3.8 to 5.0, maintained by lactobacilli that help keep yeast and unwanted bacteria in check. A lubricant that sits far outside that range can disrupt the balance. So when a bottle says "pH-balanced" or "pH-matched," that's your signal: it was formulated to sit near your body's natural acidity, not well above it.

Osmolality, or the hot number to look for

Class is in session: osmolality is how concentrated a fluid is compared to your own cells. If a lube’s formula is much more concentrated than vaginal tissue, it can pull moisture out of the surface cells, leaving you drier and more irritated than when you started. Vaginal fluid typically sits around 370 to 380 mOsm/kg. Many over-the-counter lubricants we see come in far higher than that, which is why the WHO set an interim maximum of 1,200 mOsm/kg for personal lubricants, and noted that closer to the body's natural level is gentler. You'll rarely see osmolality printed on a bottle. And a brand that publishes it, or formulates specifically to keep it low, is trying to tell you something.

Water, silicone, or oil-based?

Each base behaves very differently.

  • Water-based works with every toy material and with latex and polyisoprene condoms. You may need to reapply, but it's the safest default and the only base you can use freely with silicone toys.

  • Silicone-based lasts longer and holds up in water, but will degrade your silicone toys over time. Keep it for skin-to-skin only.

  • Oil-based is long-lasting for external massage, but breaks down latex condoms. It’s also not the greatest when it comes to internal use or toys.

For anyone with sensitive skin or a history of yeast infections, water-based and glycerin-free is the combination most clinicians will point to.

The great glycerin question

We’ll cut right to the chase. For most people: yes, skip the glycerin lube. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol, and for people prone to yeast infections it can feed the yeast and raise the odds of a flare. It isn't dangerous for everyone, but if you experience recurrent infections, a glycerin-free formula takes at least one variable off the table. The same goes for warming or tingling additives and added fragrance, which are among the most common culprits of irritation. We see you!

Two quick checks before you buy

First up: condoms. Protection comes first, and water-based and silicone-based are both latex-safe. Oil-based isn't.

Second, toys. If you own silicone toys, use a water-based lube, since silicone on silicone can degrade the toy's surface over time.

Aloe Lube is Dame's water-based option: $19 for a 4 fl oz bottle, formulated around organic aloe vera with hemp seed, quinoa seed, and green tea extracts, matched to vaginal pH, and free of glycerin, parabens, sugar, and added hormones. Which is why it can be used with body-safe silicone toys, and every condom type.

Questions people actually ask

What's the best type of lubricant for sensitive skin?

Water-based, glycerin-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, with a pH near the body's natural range. It works with toys and condoms and carries the fewest common irritants.

Is glycerin in lube bad for you?

Not for everyone. But if you're prone to yeast infections, glycerin can feed yeast and increase the chance of a flare. That means a glycerin-free formula is often the safer pick.

Can I use the same lubricant with all my toys?

If its formula is water-based, yes. These work well with every toy material, silicone included. Silicone-based lube shouldn't be used with silicone toys, since it can degrade your toys.

What does osmolality mean on a lubricant?

How concentrated the lube is compared to your cells. Very high-osmolality lubes can dry out and irritate tissue, which is why the WHO recommends staying at or below 1,200 mOsm/kg, and ideally closer to the body's natural level.
