Why We’re Refunding the Trump Tariff Surcharge

The Supreme Court has ruled the recent Trump-era tariffs unlawful.


When those tariffs went into effect, Dame’s customs bill tripled almost overnight.

We spent over $100,000 with U.S. Customs as a result.


To stay afloat, and to be transparent about why, we added a Trump Tariff Surcharge to orders (yes, the little toupee icon at checkout).

Now that those tariffs have been ruled unlawful, we’re refunding every customer who paid that surcharge.


I, Al the founder, not ai the robot, twee-fully believe that businesses can help the world be better. We can show up with our own policies and things the right way.


What we’re doing—automatically refunding customers when a charge is no longer justified—is something the government could choose to do as well.

Do I have to apply for the refund?
No. Refunds are automatic. If you paid the surcharge, you’ll receive your money back without taking any action. Because wouldn’t it be annoying to have to go through a whole process when the people who charged you have all the information necessary to repay you? 😒


Why are you refunding it?
Because it was tied directly to tariffs that have now been ruled unlawful.
We added the surcharge to offset a specific, documented cost imposed on our business. Now that the policy behind it has been deemed unconstitutional, it doesn’t feel right not to issue a refund. 😒


Will the government refund Dame the money it paid?
Probably not.

We paid over $100,000 in customs costs as a result of those tariffs (approximately three times what we paid last year). And there’s a real chance we may never recover that money. The administration is already working its way around the ruling, and any rebate process could take years (if it happens at all).

But whether we get reimbursed or not isn’t your burden to carry.


Why refund customers if you might not get your money back?
