Your Field Guide to Pleasure & Weed

By Sophie Saint Thomas | Created on 04/20/2018 | Updated on 10/13/2022
Most people who like getting stoned have figured out that it makes sex even better. But to celebrate 4/20, in honor of weed, and sex, let’s talk about why that is exactly. When done responsibly (aka, not smoking so much you end up too paranoid to talk, let alone fuck), getting high and then getting it on marries two of the best things in life. Weed provides pleasure all on its own, so stoned sex is like, proof that god (or at least goddess Mary Jane) exists. While when it comes to drugs and sex, a few safety tips can’t hurt, overall, cannabis is an incredibly safe way to enhance sex. From CBD tinctures, to weed lube, to just a joint, cannabis is indeed an aphrodisiac. Not only can it increase blood flow to the genitals, but studies (stoners love when science rules in our favor) show that cannabis use can be beneficial to emotional processing, aka, make you more empathetic and less of an asshole. Don’t worry, we’ll cover everything from anal suppositories to the need to stay hydrated. Here’s your field guide to pleasure and weed.

There are a few things to be aware of with stoned sex.

Cannabis buds are plucked straight from a plant, weed doesn’t leave you hungover as booze does, and exactly zero people have died from over-consumption. Pot sounds like a miracle product, right? It is. Cannabis does everything from relieving nausea to help tune you into you and your partner’s needs. But let’s be real; yes cannabis is a medicine, but it’s also a drug. So let’s get the bad news out of the way. Overconsumption, especially with edibles, as they can be hard to dose and take time to kick in, can leave you feeling paranoid or out of touch with reality. Any drug, however fabulous that alters your state of mind can affect your ability to give consent. While if you’re in a long-term relationship, you probably feel safe about discussing boundaries, keep this in mind especially if you’re using weed on a date or before sex with a new partner or in a situation such as a play party. If you’re new to having stoned sex, before you and your high self gets it on with someone else, take a night in to masturbate stoned. Not only is this a fabulous form of self-care, but it gives you an idea of your tolerance and how sexual touch feels while high in a safe space. Speaking more physically, you know how weed gives you dry mouth? While such reports were met with controversy, some doctors say that pot can affect the mucous membranes of the vagina in the same manner, hence reports of “cotton vagina.” Unfortunately, the phenomenon is under-researched. One thing is certain: drinking water is good for your sexual health. Not only does water help you stay well-lubricated, but it helps with dry mouth which can hinder your make-out game, and prevent signs of dehydration such as headaches. So don’t forget to hydrate before and after enjoying stoned sex.

Here’s the sex & cannabis products worth your money.

With legalization, and the “duh” realization that stoned sex is crazy fun, many cannabis entrepreneurs are quick to capitalize on the industry. There’s no right answer as to what weed products are good for stoned sex and which ones suck, as everyone’s brain and consumption preferences vary. Cannabis can act as an aphrodisiac, but there’s no one-size fits all magical weed elixir. Indeed, elixirs, in particular, CBD tinctures, can be therapeutic in particular for those who experience anxiety. A CBD tincture can help relax you without the same high as smoking, vaping, or edibles, as CBD is stress-reducing but doesn’t get you high like THC does. Topicals, or cannabis products applied to the skin, such as Foria Pleasure Spray, can also enhance your sex life without getting you stoned (unless you lick the pleasure spray off your partner’s genitals). Recommended to apply to the labia, Foria Pleasure spray enhances sexual sensation. One thing to keep in mind when using Foria is that it’s made with coconut oil. Coconut oil is a safe, and natural lubricant to use with a fluid-bonded partner, meaning that you’ve discontinued using condoms as you’ve both been tested and are aware of one another’s STI status. However, while Foria doesn’t bill itself as a lube, anything oil-based can break down latex, so avoid Foria Pleasure Spray if you’re using condoms. Another Foria product, that’s absolutely worth it, for those who enjoy anal penetration, is Foria Explore anal suppositories. Foria Explore is not made with coconut oil, so it’s perfect to insert in your bum to help relax the muscles prior to anal sex. Remember, the rectum isn’t self-lubricating like the vagina, so while butt sex is awesome, it requires some prep and lots of lube. Cannabis sex products such as Foria Explore rock, but remember, if you’d rather smoke a bowl than put weed up your butt, you do you. Of course, a product doesn’t have to have cannabis in it to be fun to use during stoned sex. Weed enhances sensation, and that includes physical touch. Try adding a new sex toy to your routine, such as the hands-free Eva II. The adorable sex toy comes in a dark aquamarine to match your favorite buds or quartz (yes, just like rose quartz, listen up, witches). Eva II is a favorite for high sex because, for people with vaginas, its wings tuck along your labia, staying in place for partnered sex. That means your hands are free to explore one another’s bodies. One of the (only) pitfalls of adding a clitoral vibrator to penetrative sex is that often it takes away a hand, that could otherwise be stroking hair, pinching nipples, or caressing your partner’s perineum. Want to use the toy for a masturbatory (literally) self-care night? You have your hands free to smoke a joint while you get off (you’re welcome).

Cannabis can enhance intimacy.

Have you had stoned sex and felt like you could read your partner’s mind? There’s evidence that cannabis can increase genital blood flow, however, perhaps the plant’s most important aphrodisiac quality takes place above the waist. The brain is the biggest sexual organ, after all. Studies suggest that the THC from weed attaches to our cannabinoid receptors and can interact with our emotional processing, therefore making you more empathetic. Cannabis can also help you be in the moment (which is one of the reasons why it’s helpful in preventing PTSD flashbacks). Sexually speaking, all of this research backs up what horny stoners already know: High sex helps you connect with your partner, and therefore improves sex. So forget Valentine’s Day, this 4/20, let’s celebrate love and connection with a joint in hand.
